In the summer of 2021, I’m going to be travelling with Challenges Abroad to work with local and rural communities in and around Battambang for two weeks. The sustainability of local communities is a top priority and they are committed to meeting the UN goals for sustainable development, helping disadvantaged people around the world have a brighter future. As a volunteer, my role will be to engage students in interactive and exciting lessons that not only give the children confidence to speak but inspire them to continue in their studies and see the successful completion of grade 12 increase. Due to strict government school curriculum and timetables, many children are not able to learn other valuable skills and access classes that inspire creativity and critical thinking. We want to engage students in sessions that bring out new types of learning and provide opportunities to expand their education outside the ‘Rote learning’ style they are used to. Sessions surrounding STEM provide students the opportunity to problem solve, engage in team or group work and allow for leadership opportunities, especially in young girls, and see critical thinking skills sharpen. In the second week, sports and crafts workshops will be run after school, ultimately leading up to a final showcase at the end of the week for parents and communities. By buying a balloon, you are entering a virtual race. The winners of the race get some great prizes (I promise this isn't a virus lol) as well as contributing to my fundraising target for this trip. Thank you!
