Hopefully in June 2021, I will be travelling to Peru as a volunteer as part of the Challenges Abroad team, supporting the FutureSense Foundation. The FutureSense Foundation is a charity registered in the UK that focuses on education, child welfare and livelihood support. While in Peru, during the first week, our work will be focused in Urubamba, a small town located in the Sacred Valley. There will be two aspects to our work. Firstly, since rural communities face a great disadvantage and have limited economic opportunities, our focus is on improving English and literacy skills to inspire children to take pride in their education and continue their learning. These skills are essential for children to enter secondary school and then later on gain employment, breaking the poverty cycle. Secondly, we will focus on providing health-based education and training sessions at local schools or in the community, this will help improve issues like malnutrition, high rates of influenza and pneumonia and reducing dietary risks.

Then moving into the second week, we will begin the amazing 5-day Salkantay trek to Machu Pichu! Exploring the unbelievable Andean lakes along the way.

Although majority of the money raised will be going directly to the charity itself to support the children and the local area, a small portion of the amount raised will help towards getting me to Urubamba in the summer to help with this incredible programme and improve the lives of the children. I am excited to embark on this journey ahead of me and I am very thankful to be able to have this opportunity to help the foundation. I chose to participate in this programme and support this charity because I want to try my best to make an impact on the local area, the vulnerable and less fortunate children's lives to allow them to live better and open up more gates for the future to hopefully allow them to further their education and go on to successful careers. I think we sometimes forget how fortunate we are to have access to daily education, clean water, without all the other privilege, we take all these things for granted, while some areas of the world haven't even got these basic necessities. This being one of the many reasons why id like to help in this project, to try and make a change in the their lives, no matter how big or small.

Here are some statistics of how the FutureSense Foundation uses the money raised for good work:

£5 can give two people free health checks

£10 a month provides a child in Cambodia with supplementary Education, books and a medical check-up

£30 enables us to provide children at under resourced schools with a desk so they no longer have to sit on the floor

£50 a month enables us to provide children at school with clean drinking water

£100 enables us to repaint a classroom to improve the learning environment for children in disadvantaged communities
