At Phyllis Tuckwell we care for adult patients and their families and carers, who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. We cover West Surrey and North-East Hampshire, and offer medical, nursing, therapeutic, emotional and practical support from the moment a patient is referred to us, through to bereavement support for their loved ones. We really get to know our patients and their families and carers, so that we can make sure the care we provide is tailored to suit their specific needs.

Our Living Well team visits patients in their own homes, offering them support and advice to help them manage everyday life. As well as nursing and medical care, this can also include providing equipment, suggesting techniques to help with symptoms such as breathlessness, and offering therapies such as massage. They run sessions on topics such as managing fatigue, remaining active, and aromatherapy, at our Hospice in Farnham and Beacon Centre in Guildford. Here, patients can also meet and socialise with each other, forming friendships and benefitting from peer support.

For patients who need symptom management or end of life care, our 14-bed In-Patient Unit (IPU) offers 24-hour care, while our Hospice Care at Home team visits those who are spending their last weeks and days in the comfort of their own homes, ensuring they receive all the support that they and their families need. Many people prefer to die at home, spending their final days in the midst of family life, where they feel comfortable and secure.

Caring for patients’ families and carers is important, as the illness of a loved one affects the whole family. Our Patient & Family Support team, which includes our Pastoral Care team, offers counselling, social work and welfare advice, and chaplaincy support, throughout a patient’s illness and into bereavement.

We care for around 2,000 patients a year, but as the NHS/Government usually only covers about 20% of our costs, we have to raise over £25,000 a day to do this.

By entering a balloon into our virtual balloon race, you can help us. For example: selling six balloons could pay for Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for a patient or visitor on our In-Patient Unit on Christmas day. Twelve balloons could pay for one and a half hours of counselling for a relative who is facing this Christmas without their loved one.

Thank you for taking part and helping us to care for those who need us this Christmas.

Our fundraising target is: £350
