Oliver, now 12 years old, was born with myelomeningocele spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which required a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. A wheelchair user, Oliver has extreme weakness in both legs, has no spatial awareness and has in-toeing which often causes him to trip and fall. He is also double incontinent so his bladder and bowels have to be managed externally daily.

In October 2019, the family were offered their first home through the housing association. Although planning permission has been granted for a number of changes to the property to enable Oliver to live safely and independently, including a downstairs bedroom with a wet room, an internal wall knock down and a driveway, the family do not currently have all the money to carry out the work.

The inability to carry out the work straight away has seen Oliver’s mother Zoe spend her time over the last 12 months split between two homes, decorating the new property whilst also caring for her two children and her father, who is also disabled, at his housing association house. The family have no where else to turn and so are relying on the generosity of wonderful strangers to help make the home adaptations a reality. Oliver is a wonderful young man who remains positive despite the life challenges he faces. Mobility and independence will become increasingly more difficult and will be a growing challenge as he gets older. Helping him to feel safe and secure in a home of his own would mean the world.
